First in this collection come five stories by Lovecraft: In the Vault, The Picture in the House, Cool Air, The Terrible Old Man and The Shadow out of Time. Another novella, his first published work, The Shadow over Innsmouth, completes the first part of the volume.
The second part is made up of stories from the collaboration. Among the papers left by Lovecraft, and found after his death, were various notes and outlines for works which he did not live to write. Of these the most complete, The Survivor, is the first in this group. The scattered notes were put together by August Derleth whose finished stories evolved from Lovecraft's suggested plots, and follow The Survivor in the present volume. The titles Wentworth's Day, the peabody Hereitage, The Gable Window, The Ancestor, The Shadow out of Space, The Lamp of Alhasred, The Fisherman of Falcon Point, The Dark Brotherhood; and final novella, The Shuttered Room, which links together Innsmouth and Dunwich themes achieving a typical Lovecraftian horror.
Lovecraft's work is convincingly rooted in the world of everyday reality, however strange and outré it may be.
