Amharic is an official language spoken in Ethiopia, but it is also found in Egypt and Eritrea, as well as in Israel, Sweden, Canada and the United States.
The name Amharic (ኣማርኛ – amarəñña) is taken from the Amhara district (አማራ), in northern Ethiopia, which is believed to be the birthplace of the language.
This book is primarily a situation-based text book for novice learners. Although it is designed for beginners, it would also help learners at the level of early intermediate.
The text book has twelve units. In each unit, Dialogues, Expressions and Vocabulary items, Grammar, Exercises and cultural considerations are incorporated. The dialogues focus on different everyday situations. Next to the dialogues, expressions and vocabulary items relating to the situations are presented. In the grammar sections basic grammatical aspects of the language are discussed and presented with various examples. This is followed by exercises which encourage learners to practice what they have learnt in each unit.
