Product description

Amerikansk-norsk sanger og skribent. Foreldre: Bonde William (“Old Bill”) Reese og Sarah Hunter.

American-Norwegian singer and writer. Parents: Farmer William ("Old Bill") Reese and Sarah Hunter. Married 1962 with bookstore Paul Shetelig (28.2.1915-20.1.1996), son of bookstore Sverre Shetelig (born 1880).

Norwegian-born, American-born Ruth Reese made a decisive effort to increase Norwegians' understanding of the Afro-American population's history and music for decades.

She left childhood years in Alabama, one of the most racist and clearest segregated southern states in the United States, and had youth in Chicago's afro-American ghetto. She was a school student and managed to get a teacher's school exam, one of the few academic opportunities for an African-American woman in this period. Later she became Bachelor of Music Education at Northwestern University in Illinois. She took vocal education at Lawrence Brown in New York and Amanda Alridge and Roger Quilter in London, debuted as opera singer (all) in 1949 and as concert singer in Paris in 1953. After settling diligently in concert halls and cabaret stages in Europe and the Middle East, she settled In Norway in 1960, and in 1962, she married Paul Shetelig, a book seller in Oslo.
