Meaning of Manhood

£4.99

Product description

Meaning of Manhood, by G. S. Whitehead, B.A. Cultural Publications (I.U.S.) Ltd. Pbk. 1957. 35 pp.
Slim pamphlet “covering the physical changes during puberty and the problems of adolescence”. Part of the ‘Approach to Life’ series.

This item is very much of its time, and therefore something of a curiosity to the social historian of the 1950s. it contains what were clearly meant to be helpful comments about ‘Nature’s safety valve, the “nocturnal emission”’ and about the ‘weakening’ dangers of masturbation. It sternly warns against ‘mentally sick’ homosexuals, whom the author unrepentantly calls “perverts”. This was the very year of the Woolfenden report (though the Act it subsequently led to did not become law until a whole decade later).
