Beethoven Sonatas for Pianoforte

Product description

Title: Beethoven Sonatas For Pianoforte

Edited by Harold Craxton

Commentaries and Notes by Donald Francis Tovey

Vol. II

Introduction:

The Pianoforte Sonatas of Beethoven must always be among the choicest possessions of all who love music and especially of those who make music their main interest and study.

Models of coherence and lucidity, they provide the musician with examples of never tiring self - criticism in the pursuit of ideal perfection. A vivid commentary on the Composer's life, they allow us to see a great and tragic personality both reacting to circumstance and at the same time controlling circumstance. And further, the discerning student may see in them how the personal experience of the composer broadens out into a universalised significance that speaks to and evokes response from the heart of humanity.

While the enlightened use of these sonatas carries with it the privilege of being admitted, if we will, into the companionship of a great mind dealing with problems of beauty in music and its perfect presentation, there exists also, in the too great concentration that maybe brought to the literal side of performance, the danger of missing the marvellous spirit that lies behind, and in the music itself.

We feel sure that the assistance offered in this edition by Professor Donald Francis Tovey and Mr. Harold Craxton towards a fuller knowledge and understanding of these works will be appreciated by all who avail themselves of it.
