Gustav Mahler: His Mind and His Music - Volume 1, The First Five Symphonies

£9.99

Product description

Second Impression published in 1972 by Victor Gollancz. First published in 1966.

Written by Neville Cardus with over 400 music examples copied, written and edited by Rudolf Schwarz.

This is the first full-scale study of Mahler's first five symphonies to appear in English. The author does not 'analyse' the Mahler symphonies pedantically or musicologically. Taking a Mahler's theme he relates theme to theme, modulation to modulation, with a view to understanding the workings of Mahler's mind and imagination. He describes Mahler in the round; he presents his complex and often frustrated mind against the musical background of the period.

Complete with price-clipped dust jacket, which has light edge wear. Text pages are very clean, no annotations and a tight binding.
