This comprehensive volume was perhaps one of the first to appear in the latter part of the 20th century, some 50 or 60 years after the famous Cecil Sharp collections of the 1900-1920s, when there was a huge revival of interest in English country dance music. Since the 1980s, a similar spike in interest has been seen, as shown by the continuing popularity of Morris dancing and maypole dances. This book provides the tunes from as far back as a 1651 edition of 'The English Dancing Master' by John Playford (in facsimile), right up to tunes collected by the editor himself.
Michael Raven (1938-2008) was an English author, musician, composer and poet, keenly interested in folk music, local history, and photography. As well as performing as a solo guitarist and member of several groups, he wrote several comprehensive and highly-regarded guides to the counties of Staffordshire, Shropshire and Herefordshire, books of landscape photography and original poetry.
Our book is in good condition, the illustrated external covers showing few signs of wear apart from a couple of faint stain marks and some general slight grubbiness. Its laminated protective cover is undamaged. Inside, the binding is firm with no loose pages; all pages clean and bright.
