The Dong with a Luminous Nose and other Poems, by Edward Lear, with pictures by Gerald Rose. Faber and Faber, 1969. Pbk. 29 pp.
A charming children’s edition of that great tragic poem about the travails of a Dong with a Shining Proboscis. Attractively designed: the blurb tells us, with perhaps uncharacteristic accuracy, that the illustrations ‘capture Lear’s unique blend of nonsense, poetry and melancholy’. Personally I could have done without the winsome Mr. and Mrs. Spikky Sparrow (‘Twicky wicky wicky wee, / Wikky bikky twicky tee, / Spikky bikky bee!’---that exclamation mark, compounding the felony tenfold, in particular just makes me wince), but otherwise this is a reasonable enough introduction for young readers to Lear’s plangent whimsy. Adults too may well regard this a 'collectable' item, for the charm of its illustrations and its general production values: very redolent of the 1960s.
