Five Miles From Bunkum

£6.99

Product description

This book tells the story of the Essex village of Ashdon in the early part of the 20th century. Chris and his brothers entered the building trade as boys and in the chapter 'Of Clay and Wattles Made' he describes building methods from the making of pug bricks to a fully finished timber and plaster cottage, pargeted with local mortar and thatched with combed straw. We learn too how the old post mill was made, and watch the miller working in it. Blacksmith, wheel wright, clerks in orders, and the squire all figured too in the authors' daily lives: the woods in season teemed with small animals and birds, poachers and shooting men; while Granny and Rueben Ford baked home-made bread and made ale and wine from old country recipes.

Monochrome photographs and pen & ink drawings are bought to life by the accompanying clear & legible text. There is a contents page at the front followed by a list of quotations, list of illustrations and preface & acknowledgement; at the back of the book is an index of names and crafts.

The book is complete with original dust-jacket. which is brown & gold and has illustrations on the front cover; the boards are orange and the title, author's names and publisher's mark is gilt embossed on the spine. The cut binding is still tight. There is a stain on the top edge of the book.
