There is some fading to the edges of the dust jacket externally, and some discoloration to the top edge of the dust jacket internally. There is chipping to the top and bottom of the spine of the dust jacket. There is minor shelf wear to the bottom fore edge corner of the back cover. The free endpapers have some discoloration. There is very minor foxing affecting pages 42 and 43.
John Weatherhill published fine books on Asia and the Pacific. Raymond Bushell is well known among netsuke collectors the world over for his authoritative books and articles on the subject. This book is intended for the collector whether a newcomer or an old hand. There are detailed descriptions of 45 different categories of collections, and the author gives an in-depth discussion of the criteria for a good collection.
Therefore this book will be essential for anyone interested in collecting netsuke, or simply interested in the subject, for its wealth of information and the excellence of the 790 colour photographs illustrating the various designs used. There are also 300 photographs of carvers’ signatures. The appendices cover the carvers represented; netsuke with inscriptions; netsuke with kakihan minus signature; uncommon materials illustrated; and the collections represented.
