Confirmation - Its Place in the Baptismal Mystery

£9.99

Product description

"Dr Thornton has deferred completion of the third volume of his great work, 'The Form of the Servant', to apply the same principles of biblical study to this timely consideration of baptism and confirmation. It is primarily an inquiry into the teaching of the New Testament, but the author sets that teaching against the wider background of a survey of Christian thought and practice outside the New Testament.

He takes account of the importance of Jewish and more ancient backgrounds, and of the recovery of early liturgical texts, and he discusses the original contributions made to the subject by Dom Gregory Dix. In an appendix to G. W. H. Lampe's 'The Seal of the Spirit', Dr Thornton relates his studies to a particular situation in current thought. His massive and fearless scholarship is lightly won in a book which is of immediate importance to every thinking member of the Church of England."
