The Origins of Christianity

£24.99

Product description

This volume presents an investigation of the social roots of early Christianity, and of the forces which contributed to the foundation of the Christian Church. The author traces the development of messianic ideas among the Jews of the Roman Empire; discusses the so-called "myth theory" about Jesus, and maintains that the Christ story did originate from definite historical events, and analyses the different tendencies which arose within the early Christian Communities. A scholarly and stimulating book about a subject perhaps not these days of universal interest, but nonetheless worthy of the reader's attention.

Archibald Horace Mann Robertson (1886–1961) was an English civil servant (described as an 'atheist') who became a writer on history, social affairs from a left-wing perspective and critiques of Christianity.

Our copy is in excellent condition, the (unclipped) dust jacket protected by a plastic outer cover, and showing only minor signs of wear at the top corners, and top & bottom of the spine. The book itself is bound in a brownish maroon cloth with bright gilt lettering on the spine, and likewise shows no signs of wear or use. Page tops are stained red. Inside, the binding is firm, and all pages clean and only very lightly browned at the edges. A brown band on both free endpapers marks the edge of the fold of the dust jacket.
