A Sound Like Water Dripping: In Search of the Boreal Owl

£29.99 Out Of Stock

Product description

A Sound Like Water Dripping: In Search of the Boreal Owl by Soren Bondrup-Nielsen - 2009
Paperback with dust-jacket. Very minor marking on back where somebody tried to remove a sticker.

This wonderful little book recounts Bondrup-Nielsen's graduate studies on the Boreal Owl, a small and enigmatic northern owl, in Ontario in the 1970's. At the time, little was known of this species in the wild -- its nesting behavior had only been recorded a few times, and its vocalizations had never even been described. Bondrup-Nielsen tells great stories about the ups and downs of finding Boreal Owls in the wild: the long nights snowshoeing through virgin boreal forest, the dangers of scaling rotting trees with climbing irons, the thrill of recording the owl's call for the first time, and the heart-stopping moment when he looked into a tree cavity containing a female and three owl nestlings. Written in a friendly, straightforward, plainspoken style, this book won't win any prizes for elegance of prose, but its enthusiasm is utterly infectious.
