The Pied Flycatcher

£19.99 Out Of Stock

Product description

The Pied Flycatcher is one of Europe's best studied species. The first detailed work on it was begun in the 1930's by German ornithologists, but it was Lars von Hartman's Finnish study that both established long term research on the species and founded many of the central themes of modern ornithology. Soon after, in the late 1940's, Bruce Campbell set up an intensive project in South West England, which also still runs to this day. Many other eminent ornithologists followed and in 1979 Arne Lundberg and Rauno Alatalo started their own work in Sweden, Finland and latterly the north of England. A Palaearctic migrant, the Pied Flycatcher is notable for its very variable male plumage and complex territorial and polyomous breeding system. They take readily to nest boxes and have provided excellent opportunities for the study of a wide range of biological problems. The broad review of the species provides not only a detailed biology of this fascinating little bird, but a commentary on many of the most interesting problems in bird behaviour ecology. Book condition throughout excellent: dust jacket complete and unmarked, cloth covers excellent and all pages crisp and clean.

Oxfam Bookshop Shaftesbury

Our Oxfam bookshop in Shaftesbury is situated at the top of one of Britain's loveliest hills. Gold Hill affords a magical view across the Blackmore Vale and the bookshop lies between it and the old Abbey grounds which date back to 888AD. We can't claim to have manuscripts of that antiquity but we do have an extensive selection of beautiful books from our large children's section through fiction, biography, poetry, classic literature and humour to a fine collection of works on art, sport, cooking and gardening. In addition to this comprehensive and exciting array of books we also carry a large and varied stock of vinyl albums and singles both old and new and a fine stock of classical and popular CDs and DVDs. Our lovely selection of cards for all occasions is also very popular. Staffed predominantly by volunteers we're a friendly and helpful bunch and look forward to seeing even more interested music and book fans soon!
