Wildlife: Tame But Free

£9.99

Product description

Wildlife: Tame But Free
H G Hurrell
David & Charles, Newton Abbot, 1968
Signed by the author, with a drawing of a swimming seal with a ball, on the half-title.
Hardback; 145 x 225 mm; orange boards with gold titles on spine; 188 pages. Original unclipped dust jacket. Many black and white photographs, and line illustrations by the author.
The book is in very good condition though slightly cocked. The binding is sound. There is some wear and chipping of the dust jacket. Internally there is some tanning of the jacket. The top of the book’s spine is lightly bumped. The front free endpaper has a brief gift message in blue ink dated Christmas 1972 on the recto. There is a small mark on the verso of the fly title from the drawing on the half-title. There is some minor tanning of the edges of the leaves, visible when the book is closed, and light tanning of the back endpapers.
This is a study by the author of the elusive region of animals existing between the “tame” and the “wild”. He kept otters, seals, and pine martens at his home. His earlier experiences as a falconer proved invaluable in his studies. The book presents a picture of attitudes to such wildlife as they were 50 years ago.
