A Road to Damascus : Mainly Diplomatic Memoirs from the Middle East [1997, Association Copy]

£39.99

Product description

Published in 1997 by The Radcliffe Press.

Ivor Lucas' memoirs. He spent 33 years as a diplomat, mostly in the Middle East. He served as an ambassador to Oman and to Syria and, after retirement in 1984, he maintained his interest in Middle Eastern affairs in a commercial and then an academic context. In this book, Lucas portrays the diplomatic service from the point of view of a 'toiler in the vineyards', which he believes is the reality of much of diplomatic life today, as distinct from the glossy version often portrayed in the media. His account contains official and personal anecdotes.

Includes a section of black & white photographs. The foreword is written by Sir James Craig, and this copy was formerly owned by him and his name is written on the front end paper. Sir James Craig (1924–2017), a British diplomat who was ambassador to Syria and Saudi Arabia, and also an academic and writer.

Complete with dust jacket, which is lightly creased along its top and bottom edges. In very good condition, clean with a firm binding. The pages are lightly yellowed.
