An Oxford University Chest: A Description of the Town and University of Oxford Between the Wars [1970]

£34.99 Out Of Stock

Product description

Republished in 1970 by S R Publishers Limited, a facsimile reprint from the 1938 Edition.
It includes photographs by László Moholy-Nagy and illustrations by Osbert Lancaster and by Rev. Edward Bradley. Gold gilt lettering to the spine. List of illustrations is included, together with an extensive index.

The author John Betejeman describes the three Oxfords, Christminster, Motopolis, and the University, each having an elemental influence on the whole, as is demonstrated by the book's final section - an extremely detailed and beautifully illustrated architectural tour. To view the physical aspects of the town without first considering these influences is to ignore the very essence of Oxford. This is emphasised by the author's approach to the subject, whereby he first paints the backdrop against which the buildings must be seen.

In Very Good to Good condition. There is a stain on the right hand edge of the text block, noticeable when viewed from side and the book is closed, however it does not really show on the pages when open. Some light wear to the jacket at the top of the spine dust jacket, and minor shelf wear creasing at the top of the book's dust jacket. Boards have slightly bumped corners at the top. Tight binding and clean pages. Overall in Good to Very Good condition.
