Empire of the mind (Rare, Signed) by Iqbal Ahmed

£12.99

Product description

This book is in a nearly new condition. Externally the corners show some slight evidence of wear/storage. The edition is number 77 out of 100 limited edition and is signed by the author. The Patterned boards are from a design by Diana Wilbraham for the Curwen Press and has been bound by the Bookbinders of London Limited. Internally the pages are all clean, tight and unmarked.

Iqbal Ahmed records a journey through Britain, an island which was until recently a major colonial power. The political empire has ceased to exist, but a cultural empire has replaced it.

`Iqbal Ahmed's Empire of the Mind is an elegant epistle of
disillusion. Though he arrives in Britain hoping to find what his US
guidebook describes as the "genuinely most civilised" country, Iqbal
discovers it has "one of the world's largest prison populations". Feeling
similarly circumscribed, he brilliantly observes the chilly, rootless life
lived by many immigrants. A snack on Bournemouth Pier sums up the seedy
blandness of the former hub of empire: "The chips were tasty but the fish
didn't seem so fresh. Evidently that didn't matter" '
