How To Do Things With Words

£9.99

Product description

This work sets out Austin's conclusions in the field to which he directed his main efforts for at least the last ten years of his life. Starting from an exhaustive examination of his already well-known distinction between performative utterances and statements, Austin here finally abandons that distinction, replacing it with a more general theory of illocutionary forces' of utterances which has important bearings on a wide variety of philosophical problems.

Originally published in 1962, this paperback volume is a 2009 reprint of the second edition. It includes the prefaces to the first and second editions plus a note on the 1980 impression. It is in a very good condition.

Oxfam Bookshop Hexham

We relocated in January 2016 to larger premises and are now able to offer a wider range of books and music (you can come and check out your musical choices in our listening booth and also find out a lot more about Oxfam's work.). We have a new local interest section, more space for history and have extended our craft and arts offer.  We also sell cards, fair trade food and ethical cleaning and beauty products.

Hexham is a market town situated in the beautiful Tyne Valley - the ideal stopping off point before exploring Hadrian's Wall, Chesters, Housesteads and the Temple of Mithras at Carrawburgh.
