The Imagined Past - History and Nostalgia Edited by Christopher Shaw and Malcolm Chase Manchester University

£50.00

Product description

The way we see the past is a reflection of our concerns about the present. Contemporary popular culture has become obsessed with sepia-tinted images of worlds we have lost. Advertising and the media search out bygone themes and politicians elevate Victorian values. Why should this trend have emerged? What selectivities and distortions does it entail? How does it affect our sense of the past?

The Imaged Past uses the new insights of social and cultural history to decode the relationship between past and present. It finds answers in landscape painting, in the hidden agendas of political philosophy, in the adventure stories of Edwardian days and in the prose and poetry of the 1930s. Through such case studies it clarifies the concept of nostalgia itself.

The Imagined Past will interest scholars and students across the disciplines of history, cultural and social studies, fine art and literature. It will also appeal to those concerned with the conservation of the past and the way out heritage is presented. It will be required reading for anyone interested in the uses of the past and in its continuing impact on the present.

This is a former library book and carries stamps and stickers inside. The dust jacket is slightly torn but still largely intact. Inside the book is clean and the binding is tight.
