The Politics of Johannes Althusius

£7.99

Product description

Subtitled: An abridged translation of the Third Edition of Politica Methodice Digesta, Atque Exemplis Sacris et Profanis Illustrata And including the Prefaces to the First and Third Editions.

From 1603 to 1654 Johannes Althusius' Politics was published in Germany and in the Netherlands, in at least six editions, and was extensively cited by contemporary writers on political thought. Yet in the following centuries it gradually fell into relative obscurity until, in the 1880s, Otto von Gierke reacclaimed Althusius as "among the masters in the history of political science".

This carefully abridged translation of the Politics represents, in fact, the first publication in a modern language to offer in Althusius' own words the entire basic structure of his political theory. It includes the original preface to the first edition as well as the third, upon which this translation is based; a detailed introduction by the translator, Frederick S. Carney; and an illuminating preface by Carl J. Friedrich.

There are signs of shelf wear to the edges of the dust jacket and a tear to the dust jacket on the back cover. There is mild foxing to the edges of the pages. Internally, the pages are clean and the binding is tight.
