THE STRENGTH OF THE PEOPLE by Helen Bosanquet
A first edition published by Macmillan in 1902 of this influential study of Social Economics by the noted social reformer Helen Bosanquet. The author born in 1860 to a middle-class family was home tutored but achieved the rare distinction of gaining a first class degree in Moral Sciences from Newnham College Cambridge in 1889. She was however unable to secure an academic position and turned to work with charitable organisations. She was closely involved in developing the Poor Law and wrote extensively about the causes of poverty. Her work laid the foundations of modern social work in Britain. This book deals with her views on poverty, it’s causes and remedies including it’s effect on the family, children and the elderly.
