Product description

For many Dutch people, sport is a pleasant way of spending leisure time. Many are active as athletes themselves or attend sports competitions. High level competitions can count on great media attention. A more limited but enthusiastic group volunteers for sports clubs. Usually the exercise is pleasant, but sometimes it does not go as desired. Television images of supporter violence or chants in the stands are known, but many amateur athletes are also not left free from undesirable experiences. The severity of these forms of undesirable behavior varies, as does their impact on witnesses and victims. Moreover, this undesirable behavior takes many different forms, such as theft, vandalism, threats, physical and verbal violence, discrimination and nuisance from smoke, alcohol or noise. This research focuses on undesirable behavior in recreational sports. First of all, it provides more insight into the extent to which undesirable behavior occurs. How many athletes are witnesses or victims? Moreover, this incidence is compared with that in other social sectors. Next, it is described how images about sports and negative experiences affect the participation in sports.
