Product description

72 pp. Good. 1892 1st edition. Authored by JG Millais, with 15 colour plates, 18 autotype pictures, 30 pictures using "woodcut" and similar print-making processes. All plates and autotypes have paper guards present. Half-bound red covers, gilt etched titles to spine. Minor shelf wear to covers, some scuffs on back cover. 5 cm open tear to top of spine. Block clean, gilt top edge. Binding remains in very good condition. Minor spotting to front papers, and occasional other pages. Dampstaining encroachment from edges to a few of the plate pages (different quality paper); none has impinged upon the images themselves, which remain vibrant. The text pages, and images themselves, remain in excellent condition. Overall, a very good tightly bound copy of Millais' well-known monograph on four primary species: Capercaillie, Blackgame, Grouse and Ptarmigan.

Personal details to FEP -- "D.I. Molteno M.B.O.U., Glenlyon, 1940". (Believed to be Major Donald Ian Molteno of the Black Watch, died in action 1945. Member British Ornithological Union.)

This rare book will be an absolute delight for ornithologists, country sports followers, artists, and historians of the natural world, containing some of the finest examples from late 19th century. Authored by one of Britain's most influential ornithological artists of the period, John Guille Millais (FZS).
