This rare book will be an absolute delight for ornithologists, artists, and historians of the natural world, containing some of the finest examples from late 19th / early 20th century. Written and illustrated by one of Britain's most influential ornithological artists of the period, John Guille Millais (FZS), with 8 water-colour drawings from eminent ornithological artist Archibald Thorburn (FZS).
Original half-bound green cloth, gilt lettering, top edge gilt. Covers with some scuffing, some bumping to corners, and 2 cm dampstain to front cover. Vertical split to spine outer. Block clean; binding remains in good condition. Page separation grazes on FFEP where had been adhered to pastedown. Minor foxing to front endpapers, and some discolouration around edges of a small number of pages. But otherwise, and primarily, the contents are clean and bright, with no deterioration impinging on text or graphical contents. Personal details to FFEP -- "Donald Ian Molteno, Glenlyon House, Fontingall. May 1936" (believed to be Major Donald Ian Molteno of the Black Watch, died in action 1945. Member British Ornithological Union).
