The Author explains the subjects treated by medieval carvers, whether religious or mythological, depicting sports or domestic scenes, gives the background to the styles used and to the history of church seating. Lavishly illustrated with black and white photographs.

The dust cover is worn and shows fading along the spine. There is a two cm tear to the back of the dust cover and it generally shows signs of shelf wear and usage. The board cover retains its green colour and bright gold lettering. The pages are clean and unmarked and the binding is sound.
