Baedeker's Egypt 1929

£22.99

Product description

Hardback book with protective dust jacket. Light wear to dust jacket, including some slight rips and creasing at the corners. Book cover and spine have minimal wear. Light wear to page edges.

The first English edition of Baedeker's handbook for travellers to Egypt was published in 1878. Its publication, like that of the handbook for travellers to Palestine and Syria which came out in 1876, must be seen as a response to a growing interest on the part of educated people in Western Europe and North America in the ancient civilisations of the Middle East and the opportunities for travel in this area that were created by the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869.

At the time of the handbook's publication, little information on the historical and geographical background required by travellers to Egypt was available in book form; because of this a series of specially written articles on these topics was included.

The first edition of Baedeker's Egypt was prepared under the direction of Professor Ebers. Later editions extended the coverage of the handbook to include the Sudan. The eighth edition, which is reprinted here, incorporates further textual revisions which take account of archaeological discoveries after World War I, including the finding of the tomb of Tutankhamun in 1922.
