English Hours FIRST EDITION

£23.99 Out Of Stock

Product description

First edition, published 1905. 92 Illustrations by Joseph Pennell, integrated into text (see image 2 for a double-page example). Henry James, the master 19th century American novelist, was also celebrated as a travel writer during his lifetime.

Grey linen-grain cloth in an edition of 1000 copies in this colour (1000 more of the original printing were remaindered and issued in different colour cloth). Many of the chapters had been printed in magazines such as Century Magazine and the Nation in the 1890s. This edition, with 3 pieces not already printed in those magazines, is classified as number A62 in the Leon Edel Henry James bibliography.

Generally good condition for age. No highlighting or other notes/marks. The full-page illustrations which had been pasted, are all pristine. Some foxing to end papers but text block is fresh and clean. Some scuffing and cloth separation between covers and spine. These minor faults mean a low price for this scarce item.
