Vintage Liberty Of London Heritage Collection Hera Peacock Feather Blotting Board

£55.00

Product description

Vintage Liberty of London Heritage Collection Hera Peacock feather blotting board! The tail feathers of peacocks were very popular motifs with designers at the time of the Aesthetic Movement and Pre-Raphaelite. Different cultures have attributed special meanings to the peacock; often connected to immortality, and used to symbolise resurrection and renewal. Named Hera after the Greek goddess as one of her symbols was a peacock feather. This pattern is one of a large number of commercial designs drawn by Arthur Silver who set up the Silver Studio at Brook Green in 1880, later moving to Haarlem Road, Hammersmith, London.

This textile was originally sold through Liberty's shop in Regent Street, London, which helped proliferate the Aesthetic style in England. It was revived and reprinted for the V&A's Liberty exhibition in 1975. By 1900 it became THE textile design that best represents the Liberty culture of those years. And it is still synonymous of the company today.

In a time of instant message a piece like this is nostalgic of a period when we took our time to write a letter. Gorgeous peacock feather fabric binds the board on the outside and inside. Iconic satin brand woven inside panel lining. Has a two door closure, which have leather triangle corners on the sides that meet together. The leather triangles have a silver emboss line on each that remain bold and only slightly faded. Has a solid base that is covered in a thin felt-like material. Could be used or kept as a collectable to have on show on your desk for a touch of elegance, even with a modern desk. In a used but great condition.

A few faint stains to the fabric front and marks on the blotting paper which is removable.
The base has seen some wear along the edges and at the corners, as well as a faint stain in the middle.

Measurements: 13" Length x 8.5" Width (closed)
