Antique Scientific Instrument, Stanley, London Brass Surveying Compass 1914

£150.00 Out Of Stock

Product description

A lovely example of a rare antique brass surveying compass which research has indicated was made by Stanley, London in 1914. We believe it may be a scientific nautical map instrument (not that we know what that means!!!). The top of the instrument has a Natural Sine chart attached by screws. The bass has a small bar that rotates through approx 180 degrees moving a bar arrangement inside the compass which has 2 small spirit levels attached.
It has a folding sight which lines up with north. The lid of the instrument is hinged at a point lined up with south south, and has a mirror inside with a sight line and small glass viewing hole at the bottom. The mirror allows the user to read the needle while sighting a distant object. An internal higher level disc is graduated in degrees from 0 - 360. The 'western' half of the face is graduated in degrees. The is a small brass button on the top outer ring which, when depressed, secures the compass needle in position.
The sides of the case and lid are flat, and so the instrument can be set up vertically when used for vertical angles.
