Coronation of Edward VIII Commemorative Mug 1937

WAS £7.99 £3.99 Out Of Stock

Product description

The secrecy surrounding Edward VIII's abdication in December 1936 saw the British pottery manufactures full steam ahead making commemorative mugs and beakers for his proposed coronation on 12th May 1937. In May 1937 George VI his younger brother was crowned instead and the commemorative ware for Edward VII became redundant.

"It was also the most extravagant coronation in British history. After the controversy over the shock abdication of Edward VIII in December 1936, who relinquished the throne to marry the American divorcee Wallis Simpson, no expense was spared to show it was “business as usual” for the monarchy."
