21st film in the 007 Franchise introduces a new 007 and goes back to its roots. Daniel Craig stars as the latest incarnation of James Bond, special agent and international man of mystery and intrigue. The first Bond film in many years to be based on one of the original Ian Fleming books, Casino Royale is a quieter, subtler, more brooding breed of action film, which is not to say there's any less blowings up, dirty tricks, sexy women or chase sequences. Bond is in Montenegro at a highly exclusive casino where Le Chiffre (Mads Mikkelsen) a moneyman for an international terrorist group, is raising funds for their misdeeds through high-stakes gambling. 007 must infiltrate the group and ultimately defeat the rogue player, both on and off the tables.
When Pierce Brosnan stepped down due to issues regarding his age it was unclear who would take his place. Then Craig won the role and the producers and writers decided to take the series in a whole new direction. And so they returned to the very first Fleming novel and gave it new life. The first thing that is immediately noticeable is the gritty, realistic style of direction and the more serious, but still at times humorous, nature of the script.
Craig steps into Brosnan's shoes admirably and he is, in my opinion, the best Bond there ever has been and most likely will be. His acting style combines all that is needed for a good Bond and he delivers a brilliant performance, bringing a sense of realism to the role and making Bond a flawed character. But its the script that gives Craig so much to work with and the dialogue is sharp, witty and extremely well written. The Bond girl, Eva Green, is beautiful and sexy and she too delivers a great performance. Other cast members, Judi Dench and Mads Mikkelsen as M and the villian Le Chiffe also deserve praise.
As for the plot, its full of great action set pieces, an awesome opening chase and fight scene and many more after that.
But the main stoyline is Bond who must play a complex game of poker that will allow the villian (Mads) to fund the terrorists he works for.
This is the 2 disc collectors edition of this great bond film.
