Sailor

£19.99

Product description

In 1976 BBC camera crews were invited on board Britain's best-loved warship, the aircraft carrier Ark Royal, to record what was intended to be her last voyage. As the Ark Royal sailed for America, the cameras captures a unique record of daily life on board for the officers and ratings, as well as the workings of an operational aircraft carrier with a full compliment of fighter and bomber aircraft and helicopters.

Built in 1937, the third Ark Royal - also an aircraft carrier - served with distinction in both the Atlantic and the Mediterranean during the early years of World War Two. While in the Atlantic, she played a crucial role in the hunting down and destroying of the German battleship Bismarck. She was later to fall victim to a U-Boat attack and was sunk. An Audacious-class fleet aircraft carrier, the fourth Royal Ark is the ship seen here in the BBC documentary series. While her keel was actually laid down in Cammel Laird's Birkenhead yards in 1943, she was not officially launched until May 1950 and commissioned in February 1955. In 1980, after decades of faithful service, she was finally scrapped and broken up. Today the proud name Ark Royal is borne by an Invincible class aircraft carrier - the Fifth to officially bear the name. Originally called HMS Indomitable, she has seen action in the Balkans theatre of operations and also took part in 2003's invasion of Iraq.

The three DVDs are held in a folding case which has a single crease down one spine but is otherwise in excellent condition. The outer slipcase has only light marks. The discs are all bright and unmarked. Running time approx. 5 hours 42 mins. Includes the BBC follow-up programme - 'Sailor - Eight Years On', and bonus feature 'Med Patrol'.
