The Beeching Railway E

£2.99 Out Of Stock

Product description

The Beeching Axe proposals of March 1963 were, unsurprisingly, accepted in full by the Minister of Transport, Ernest Marples, even though there was some opposition form within the Conservative Party. However, it was one of a series of events which would rapidly change British politics over the next twelve months.

Popular resentment at the scale of the suggested cuts helped Harold Wilson to lead the Labour Party into government for the first time in thirteen years. Resolved to reverse the cuts, the Government changed its mind when it achieved power. In 1965 British Railways became British Rail and a new 'Corporate Image' was created, just before Dr Beeching returned to his ICI roots. The Government increased its majority in early 1966 and the new Transport Minister Barbara Castle, had no choice but to allow the process of change to continue: major closures took place in that year. Just two years later steam traction was eliminated and the 'modern railway' started to emerge.

Dr Beeching had forecast that it would take ten years to complete his process and in the early 1970s it began to appear that he was correct. New Freightliner services were gaining new traffic and the Advanced Passenger Train and the High Speed Train promised a better future. The launch of the latter in 1976, dubbed 'Inter-City 125' ushered in 'The Age of the Train' and showed the way ahead- was this truly 'Beeching's Legacy'?
