Tunnel Raiders. E

£3.99

Product description

Tunnel Raiders
World War I saw the emergence of countless new technologies and strategies on the field of battle. But one of the most astonishing and damaging tactics deployed in the "Great War" dated back to an earlier age.
In the days of sieges and castles, sappers would tunnel beneath the massive walls of fortifications in an attempt to weaken and topple them. In the closing days of World War I, when both sides had been engaged in trench warfare for years, they started digging underneath no-man's-land between the two fronts. The idea was simple, effective and, in a conflict marked by innovation, decidedly low-tech: tunnel to a spot directly beneath the enemy, set mines or other explosives and blow up the ground on which they stood.
Tunnel Raiders uses rare photographs, personal accounts and interviews with military historians to expose the strategy that was every trench soldier's worst nightmare.
