Beatrice et Benedict - Berlioz (legendary Frenchman's last work ; melody, wit & sparkling invention 2 CDs)

£7.99 Out Of Stock

Product description

(March 1991 staging, featuring the Operatic Orchestra of Lyon, conducted by John Nelson ; and the Operatic Chorus of Lyon, directed by Marco Zambelli. Starring : Soprano Susan Graham as Beatrice ; Tenor Jean-Luc Viala as Benedict ; Soprano Sylvia McNair as Hero ; Mezzo-Soprano Catherine Robbin as Ursule ; Baritone Gilles Cachemaille as Claudio, etc.)

Hector Berlioz (1803-69) was a composer whose mastery of technique and invention grew steadily finer throughout his career - despite the inroads of nervous disease and the accumulation of moral despair, both heavily affecting his private and social life -, and indeed his musical powers certainly showed no sign of decline in his last two works, "Les Troyens" and "Beatrice et Benedict". However, the brilliance of this pair of works is one of the scant similarities that do show-up between the pair : While "Les Troyens" is a work of epic grandeur ; "Beatrice et Benedict" is a comedy of delicacy, wit, melodiousness and sparkling invention.

The synopsis revolves around the humorous and romantic comings-and-goings of the Sicilian women and their victorious soldiers, who under Don Pedro, have only recently forced the Moors out of the City of Messina.

Disc One : Beatrice et Benedict, by Berlioz (1862) :-
1) Overture (7:49) ; 2)-18) Act One (made up of 16 Scenes {61:05}).

Disc Two : Beatrice et Benedict (conclusion) :-
1) Entracte - Sicilienne (1:43) 2)-13) Act Two (made up of 6 scenes {40:42}).

(includes 143-page book, containing full libretto in English, French & German)
Disc One is in VG+ condition.
Disc Two is in EX condition.
