A rare 10 inch vinyl LP first released in 1958. Ewan MacColl was one of the people who brought about of a folksong revival. He interpreted old ballads, wrote new songs, and influenced almost everyone involved in folk music in the 1950s, ’60s and ’70s. He wrote the song "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" for Peggy Seeger, his eventual wife. She plays guitar on this record. The boisterous renditions on this LP evoke the world of sport and betting, hunts and racecourses, boxing rings and football pitches, cockfighting pits, card tables and poolrooms. The track listed are:- 1. Govan Pool-Room Song; 2.Old Bob Ridley; 3.The Sporting Races of Galway; 4.The Old Bitch Fox (Chivvy-O); 5. Football Crazy; 6. Creeping Jane; 7. Card Playing Song; 8. The Cock Fight; 9. Bold Thady Quill; 10. The Turpin–Sugar Ray Fight.
The record has a cross track mark on side 2 (tracks 4 & 5) but otherwise only faint lines. Matrix numbers are TL 227-1 and TL 227-2. The inner sleeve is creased on corners and torn along the opening edge. The album cover has some light handling marks and a old price label mark to the front top left corner; slight wear to corners. The rear cover is tanned around edges. The sleeve notes give historical information about the folk music and each song.
A nice item for both folk fans and collectors.
