Concerto 3 for Piano + Conc. for Viola - Bartok (two late, harmonious greats from the Hungarian legend - SUA ST 50439)

£5.99

Product description

(featuring soloists : Jaroslav Karlovsky on Viola {Side One} ; and, Eva Bernathova on Piano {Side Two}. Both soloists are backed by The Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by the legendary Karel Ancerl, in Early Sixties, Iron Curtain recordings, released on that redoubtable East European label, Supraphon)

These two harmonious, late great works, from the by-then (Early / Mid 1940s) ailing Hungarian legend, Bela Bartok (1881-1945), date from his time in the US, after he had emigrated there with his family in 1940.

Conversely, neither work bears any trace of the pessimism nor spiritual depression, that had overcome the composer, by the time the harsh economic realities of the wartime USA had dawned on him (he struggled to earn a living, despite good friends helping to propagate his new works, and some lecture-work at various US Universities).

Indeed, these two Concertos are both full of fresh charm, enthusiasm and even humour, and also seem to spotlight a strangely idyllic mood! The slow movements reveal deep, relaxed meditation.

Side One : Concerto for Viola & Orchestra Op. posth, by Bartok :-
1) I Moderato 2) II Adagio religioso 3) III Allegro vivace.

Side Two : Concerto No.3 for Piano & Orchestra, by Bartok :-
1) I Allegretto 2) II Adagio religioso 3) III Allegro vivace.

Records graded visually to RRPG grades (record/sleeve) EX/VG+.
