( score for the ballet "Coppelia", featuring The Bolshoi Theatre Orchestra conducted by Fayer. Soloists are : violinist Reyentovich, on "Ballad of the Wheat-Ear" {Act I} ; clarinettist Butyrsky, on "Slavic Theme with Variations" {also Act I} ; and violist Sheidin, on "Peace" {Act II Scene II} )

'Coppelia', completed in 1870, was Leo Delibes' (1836-91) first ballet ; the libretto is based on the story 'The Sand Man' by the German novelist E. T. A. Hoffmann. It is concerned with the attempts of the old and eccentric puppet-maker, Coppelius to bring to life a doll and endow it with human feelings.

Of all his dolls Coppelia is the most beautiful, and young Franz is much attracted to her. Franz and his betrothed Swanilda, who is jealous of Coppelia, seek to learn the secret of the silent beauty who often sits in the window. One day, after many adventures, some young people manage to penetrate into the puppet-maker's house and find out the doll's secret, thus upsetting Coppelius' plans.
