The Strauss family was the principal contributor to the genre of Viennese light music.
Johann Strauss the Elder, Europe's leading conductor and composer of dance music and the first of the great international 'pop' idols, was born in Vienna in 1804, the son of a humble innkeeper. Although he composed around 300 works, he is chiefly remembered for the lovely waltz Loreley-Rhein-Klänge (1843) and for the ubiquitous Radetzky-Marsch (1848) which honours the eponymous 82-year-old Commander-in-Chief of the Imperial Austrian army.
Johann Strauss the Younger, the most famous and enduringly successful of nineteenth-century light-music composers, was born in Vienna in 1825. Building upon the firm musical foundations laid by his father (1804-49) and Joseph Lanner (1801-43), Johann II, along with his brothers Josef and Eduard, developed the classical Viennese Waltz to the point where it became as much a feature of the concert hall as the dance floor. With his abundantly tuneful waltzes, polkas, quadrilles and marches, Johann II captivated not only Vienna but also the whole of Europe and America for more than half a century.
The second of Johann Strauss the elder's sons, Josef, was born in Vienna on 20 August 1827. A remarkably versatile, gifted and prolific composer - Johann II once said of him: "Pepi (Josef) is the more gifted of us two; I am merely the more popular..." - Josef left more than 300 original dances and marches, as well as 500 arrangements of music by other composers.
The third son of Johann Strauss the Elder, Eduard, was born on 15 March 1835 in Vienna. Like his two brothers, his musical output was prolific, writing over 320 separate orchestral dances and marches. Apart from the exuberant Bahn Frei! (1869) and a handful of other fast polkas (he always excelled in this particular dance form), his music is not as well known as that of his brothers. However, by 2001, over 50 of his works had been recorded on compact disc.
