Don Carlo - Verdi (opera telling of unrequited love amidst Franco-Spanish tensions 3 CDs)

£9.99 Out Of Stock

Product description

The synopsis of Giuseppe Verdi's (1813-1901) "Don Carlo" is set amidst a backdrop of the uneasy relations, between the nations of France and Spain, in the 16C (indeed, there was to be a Franco-Spanish war, not long afterward, as dramatised in the early-70s French series for older children, "The Flashing Blade").

A French Princess, Elizabeth, is all set to marry her love, the Spanish Prince, Don Carlo. But, heartbreakingly for the young couple, the Spanish hierarchy change their mind, at the last minute : Elizabeth shall instead marry King Philip, Don Carlo's father ...

Don's continued declarations of love for Elizabeth outrage the Spanish hierarchy, and they urge Philip, to have his son put to death. The rest of the French-language libretto follows the young couples' doomed course of love ...

This audio version of a 11 November 1950 MET Broadcast stars : the redoubtable Swedish tenor Jussi Bjorling as Don Carlo ; and Argentinian soprano Delia Rigal as Princess Elizabeth. There is bonus material on Disc Three : excerpts from a 6 November 1950 Telecast, unissued until 2009.
