Enigma Variations - Elgar / Young Person's Guide Orchestra - Britten - ASD 3417

£5.99 Out Of Stock

Product description

(featuring the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Sir Charles Groves)

One evening in 1898, while Edward Elgar was improvising on the piano, his wife asked him what he was playing. "Nothing", he replied, "but something might be made of it, {Hew) Powell would have done this." Indeed something WAS made of it - he had hit upon the idea for the Enigma Variations.

Each Variation is a vignette, individually inspired by different people in Elgar's life. The first performance in June the following year, under Hans Richter, was a triumph and established Elgar as the leading English composer of his day.
Side One : Variations on an Original Theme ("Enigma") Op.36, by Elgar :-
1) Var.I : Caroline Alice Elgar 2) Var.II : Hew David Steuart-Powell 3) Var.III : Richard Baxter Townshend 4) Var.IV : William Meath Baker 5) Var.V : Richard Penrose Arnold 6) Var.VI : Isabel Fitton 7) Var.VII : Arthur Troyte Griffith 8) Var.VIII : Winifred Norbury 9) Var.IX : August Johannes Jaeger 10) Var.X : Dora Penny 11) Var.XI : George Robertson Sinclair 12) Var.XII : Basil G Nevinson 13) Var.XIII : Lady Mary Lygon.
Side Two : 1) Var.XIV : Edward William Elgar.

Throughout his career, Benjamin Britten demonstrated a genius for communicating with the young, both as listeners and performers. The Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra is a splendid example, commissioned originally for the documentary film "The Instruments of the Orchestra", and given its first concert performance by the same orchestra as perform on this album but in 1946, and it was conducted, at that time, by Sir Malcolm Sargent.
Side Two : 2) Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra Op.34, by Britten.

Records graded visually to RRPG grades (record/sleeve) EX/EX-.
