HOLST: Fugal Overture BAX: November Woods MOERAN: Sinfonietta Adrian Boult - SRCS.37

£6.99

Product description

GUSTAV HOLST: A Fugal Overture

Holst's Fugal Overture was published in 1923; this record is its first recording. Holst reserves the full force of the orchestra for a few moments only, preferring to score substantial passages with an intricate dovetailing of instrumental groups; there is a strong sense of forward impulse, and the musical argument is astonishingly coherent.

ARNOLD BAX: November Woods

Arnold Bax was a romantic, whose imagination revelled in the half-light of poetic intentions. 'November Woods' was published in 1917, in close companionship with two other symphonic poems - 'Tintagel' and 'The Garden of Fand'. The orchestration is subtle, evoking innumerable colour schemes of shifting hues; the work is symphonic in structure with three clearly demarcated sections.

E. J. MOERAN: Sinfonietta

Moeran's Sinfonietta was composed in 1944; the diminutive title is reflected in lithe, wiry scoring, with fine focus upon detail - this record is also the first recording of this work. The first movement is a brisk allegro in strict sonata form; the second is a theme and variations; the final allegro risoluto combines delicate strands of colour with high virtuosity.

SIDE 1
1. Holst: A Fugal Overture
2. Bax: Symphonic Poem 'November Woods'

SIDE 2
Moeran: Sinfonietta
1. Allegro con brio
2. Tema con variazoni
3. Allegro risoluto

London Philharmonic Orchestra
Conductor: Adrian Boult

The sleeve is VERY GOOD, consistent with age; slight foxing.
Record graded visually to RRPG grade EXCELLENT.
We recommend the record is cleaned by a professional to maximise the sound quality.
