Giacomo Puccini's (1858-1924) "La Faniculla del West" opera revolves, chiefly, around the female character Minnie, the proprietress of the Polka Saloon, sited at a gold-miners' camp, in the foot of the Cloudy Mountains, California. In the synopsis, the audience is told of the rivalry for Minnie's affections between Sherriff Jack Rance, and the Bandit Ramerrez, who spends the first half of the opera masquerading as stranger-in-town "Dick Johnson".
Will Minnie betray Rammerez to the Sherriff and his posse (and, the hangman's noose ...)?
