Giuseppe Verdi's (1813-1901) opera "La Traviata", debuted in 1853, and was something of a farcical occasion ; the Italian audience couldn't stop laughing ... However, just over a year later, a restaging in Venice was a resounding success, and the work has gone on to become one of Verdi's most respected titles.
The synopsis revolves around a "fallen" (- because of her effusive attitude to free love -) Parisian beauty, Violetta ; her young well-to-do lover, Alfredo ; and their ultimately-doomed attempts to set up a happy life, together.
