Mitropoulos (legendary Athens-born conductor & pianist) and Tchaikovsky Shostakovich Prokofiev (rec.1946-56 2 x CDs)

£10.99

Product description

(Two CD box-set, with title of "The Art of Dmitri Mitropoulos", featuring Mitropoulos conducting, or playing piano, alongside The New York Philharmonic Orchestra and The Robin Hood Dell {Philadelphia} Orchestra. The box-set includes a 47-page booklet)

Dmitri Mitropoulos (1896-1960) was born in Athens, Greece, and studied the piano at that same capital's Conservatory, in the period more-or-less spanning WWI, before graduating with a soloist diploma in 1918. In fact, even before his time at Athens Conservatory, Mitropoulos was composing symphonic and operatic works - such as his "Entombment" Symphony, and the "Soeur Beatrice" Opera, the latter being successfully staged in 1920 -, although the Greek still felt he needed more knowledge of music ...

Thus, he studied both composition and the organ, at Brussels, Belgium for some months in 1920/21, before transferring to Berlin and becoming a brief acquaintance of Feruccio Busoni (the Italian composer, conductor, pianist and - in his dealings with Mitropoulos - teacher), in his later years. By 1922, Mitropoulos had secured a paid role, as a repetiteur pianist and assistant conductor at the Berlin State Opera, where his working- alongside eminent conductors of the time proved an invaluable education to the young man.

In 1924, Mitropoulos was back in Athens, and thence moved through a number of official conducting-posts ; introducing and delighting Greek audiences to an extended repertory, up to the-then contemporary music of composers such as : Mahler ; Reger ; Richard Strauss ; Debussy ; Prokofiev ; Stravinsky ; and, Schoenberg ... Before going on to become one of the most legendary conductors in the world, from the Early Thirties to the Late Fifties.

This Two-CD collection, spans four recordings made between 1946 and 1956, featuring the works of three of the most famous Russian composers of the 19C and 20C : Pyotr Tchaikovsky, Sergey Prokofiev (x2), and Dmitri Shostakovich.
