Otello - Verdi (legendary 1951 staging starring Vinay [Greatest Otello?] cond. Furtwangler 2 CDs)

£7.99 Out Of Stock

Product description

This Two-CD set contains a moment in time : 7th August 1951 at the Salzburg Festival in Austria, to be precise, when one of the very best actors to ever play the lead part of Otello - namely the legendary Chilean tenor-turned-baritone, Ramon Vinay (1912-96) - in Giuseppe Verdi's adaptation of the eponymous Shakespeare play, performed alongside the equally legendary German conductor, Wilhelm Furtwangler (1886-1954), one of the leading directors of orchestras in the 20C.

Not only that, but 1951 was an important year for Verdi-lovers, themselves : Fifty years since that Italian giant of opera-composition had passed away ; and this anniversary was surely commemorated with due reverence in his homeland.

Playing opposite Vinay, as Otello's love interest Desdemona, was the famous lead soprano of the Forties and Fifties (- and Croatian national -) Dragica ("Carla") Martinis ...
