Patience - Gilbert and Sullivan - ACL 1174, ACL 1175

£19.99

Product description

Patience by Gilbert and Sullivan A set of two records. The D'oyly Carte Opera Company with Chorus and Orchestra conducted by Isidore Godfrey

Gilbert and Sullivan's opera Patience, which was first produced at the Opera Comique Theatre, London on April 23, 1881, is a satire on the Aesthetic Movement which dominated artistic circles in England during the 1870's and early 1880's Aestheticism, the product of a reaction from the dullness and drabness of mid-simplicity in art, but, in its numerous manifestations, it very often became extravagant and absurd. Many great names were associated with the movement and it has been suggested that Gilbert's "idyllic poet" Archibald Grosvenor is modelled on Swinburne and his "fleshly poet", Reginald Bunthorne, on Oscar Wilde.
