In common with Georges Bizet's "Carmen", George Gershwin's (1898-1937) opera, "Porgy and Bess" contains many gorgeous songs that are all standouts, but are all, also, an integral part of the whole operatic work's musical fabric ...
"Porgy and Bess" is probably the most famous, US operatic work from the 20C ; the timeless tale, of a crippled beggar, who is transformed by his love for a woman with an almost-universally-scorned personal history, was musically adapted by Gershwin, from DuBose Heyward's novel, "Porgy".
This is a recording of the Late Eighties, London staging of "Porgy & Bess", starring two legends of opera, Willard White and Cynthia Haymon, and featuring The London Philharmonic conducted by Mr Simon Rattle, himself.
All three cassettes are in EX+ condition, as is the outer box.
The excellent, accompanying, 130-page booklet, which details the origins of Gershwin's operatic work, with colour reproductions of this particular staging, as well as every track-detail, and the full libretto in English, is in EX condition.
