Prokofiev Brahms MacDowell Taylor , all conducted by English/Polish Leo Stokowski (rec. early 40s , CD)

£5.99

Product description

The programme begins with the suite of three movements from Serge Prokofiev's opera, "The Love of Three Oranges", which was first produced in Leopold Stokowski's adopted homeland, the US, in 1921. The listener will note the spoken preface, by the conductor. The three excerpts are given immensely compelling performances - especially the third movement, taken more quickly than usual - the sudden ending taking the audience unawares !
1) Announcer (0:47)
Suite from "The Love of Three Oranges" Op.33a, by Prokofiev (rec.Nov 1941 ; 8:26) :-
2) I Inferno 3) II Prince & Princess 4) III March

Stokowski's conducting of US composer Edward MacDowell's Second Piano Concerto, was broadcast exactly four months, to the day, that Pearl Harbour was bombed (which brought the USA into WWII). The soloist, is Frances Nash.
5) Announcer (0:19)
Piano Concerto No.2 in D minor Op.23, by MacDowell (rec.Apr 1942 ; 18:11) :-
6) I Larghetto calmato 7) II Presto giocoso

Stokowski grew up, in a very real sense, with Johannes Brahms' Fourth and Final Symphony, as the German composer, had not started working on the piece, when Leopold was born, in 1882. The recording made here, is similar to the Stokowski's conductorship of the Symphony, that he carried out in 1974, toward the end of his life ; it has a remarkably driving intensity, and fast tempo.
8) Announcer
Symphony No.4 in E minor Op.98, by Brahms (rec.Nov 1941 ; 35:46) :-
9) I Allegro non troppo 10) II Andante moderato 11) III Allegro giocoso 12) IV Allegro energico e passionate

The programme rounds off with an eight minute work by US composer, Deems Taylor, a much-admired musician in his day, and also a popular writer, commentator, and effective musical administrator (as President of the American Society for Composers, Authors & Publishers). As a composer, he is best remembered for his operas, "The King's Henchman" and "Peter Ibbotson".
13) "Ramuntcho" - Intro & Ballet Music Act III, by Taylor (rec.Dec 1943 ; 8:12)

The CD is in EX+ condition.
